Twenty BVFD firefighters spent the day training with ESI on Winch operations. The class was taught by Pat Grub from ESI and consisted of 4 classroom hours followed by several practical techniques. With the arrival of Rescue Engine 27, a portable winch was purchased for the apparatus. This class trained our firefighters safe, efficient & effective rescue operations of using this important piece of equipment. Fairfield Fire & EMS also sent RE2 with 6 firefighters for the class.
The membership at Buchanan Valley is full of dedicated volunteers who work non-stop throughout the year running calls, working fundraisers, training, and fire prevention. Each year the PA State Firefighters Association holds it firemen’s convention. They recognize departments and firefighters of the state for their hard work.
Buchanan Valley FD was recognized in 3 areas this year. The first is the Robert W. Little Jr Memorial Fire Safety Education Award which is based on Fire Prevention efforts in your respected community. BVFD 27 received 3rd Place in Division C which is the catagory in population of less than 6000 people. The second is Hereda/Terrini Memorial Junior Firefighter Award recognizing a outstanding junior firefighter of an organization who shows leadership abilities, as well a dedication to their fire service training and school academics. Junior Firefighter Zoe Spielman was selected as a recipient of this years award ! And the last award was presented to Steve Waybrant for Firefighter of the Year. We are excited for Steve who joined The Valley recently. A top notch guy ! Congratulations to the membership, Zoe & Steve for their awards !
The Buchanan Valley Fire Department will be hosting an Officer Development Class “Moving on Up” taught by Traditions Training. The class is geared to Fire Officers and/or those who will become Fire Officers looking to build confidence with decision making. This class is open to Adams County Fire Departments initially and will be filled on a first come, first served registration basis. THE CLASS IS LIMITED TO 30 STUDENTS ! The deadline for Adams County Departments is August 1st, then it will be open to everyone. To register contact Chief Mike Spielman via email. The following “1st Alarm” Franklin County Companies are included in round 1 of registration: Franklin’s, Mont Alto, Fayetteville, South Mountain, & New Franklin. The instructors slated to teach this class are some of the best known in the fire service (Chief Larry Shultz DCFD, Chief Ricky Riley Clearwater, Dan Doyle – Pittsburgh)
Yesterday several members from Buchanan Valley FD completed the final phase of the Firefighter I training by completing a Live Burn evolution at the Franklin County Training Center. Two of these members (FF Emily Elliot & FF Karen Sanders) completed their firefighter training for the 1st time, while the others attended for a fire ops refresher. The officers would like to congratulate these members on completing the course.
